Selous Game Reserve
Selous is a wonderful safari destination for the seasoned safari client. It offers many opportunities not offered in many other parks. There is a huge diversity of wildlife and the park is very untouched.
At itinerary extension to Selous is easily organised. Located close to Tanzania's capital city Dar Es Salaam, Selous is accessible by road, or from Arusha and other cities by small plane.
There are a number of variations available for those who wish to safari here, but having done this trip by road, I do not recommend that option. Flying is expensive, but will make your trip much, much more enjoyable.
Sample Itinerary (Assuming you are arriving from Dar Es Salaam)
Day 1 - Road transfer to Selous arriving late morning. Spend the rest of the time of Safari.
Day 2 - Morning and afternoon safari drive
Day 3 - Morning Safari drive and afternoon boat trip
Day 4 - Morning and afternoon safari drive
Day 5 - Transfer to airfield for onwards flight to Arusha or Ruaha National Park
When on Safari in Selous, most accommodations offer game drives as part of their packages. They use smaller safari vehicles, as the roads are narrower, and sometimes a little damp, so less weight.
Depending on your group size, you may share a vehicle with other guests, but there is always the option for a private vehicle for a little more money (of course). The vehicles are small with only 4 seats for guests, the two seats in the front are for the driver and a guide, giving you optimum opportunity for spotting the maximum amount of game possible.
Safari in these more isolated parks is more expensive mainly because of the additional air travel involved.
